As youve noticed, this years Hot Stove season has been https://www.storebengals.com/Tyler_Kroft_Jersey.NFL rather slow to develop. Were a few days into January, and weve seen only a handful of trades and a smattering of free-agent signings Carlos Santanas $60 million deal is still the largest at the moment but most of the big names on the market are still shopping for new uniforms.MORE: With that in mind, I thought Id scan through the transactions lists on Baseball-Reference.com dating to 2000 and find the most important free-agent signings that happened in January (is it wrong that I love scanning baseball transactions lists?). Not nece sarily the biggest at the time, but the signings that made the biggest impacts (most good, some bad).Lets jump in.1. Red Sox sign David OrtizWhen: Jan. 22, 2003Need to know: This signing didnt exactly rock the Hot Stove at the time. Ortiz hit 20 homers for the Twins in 2003, but the club as penny-pinching as ever at that point didnt want to pay him the roughly $2 million he was expected to make in his first year as an arbitration-eligible player. So they released him in mid-December and Boston signed him a month later, a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. You know the rest of that story. The Red Sox won three World Series titles with Ortiz as their DH, and the left- handed slugger hit .455 with 14 RBIs and nine extra-base hits in those 14 World Series games.2. Cardinals sign Matt HollidayWhen: Jan. 5, 2010Need to know: The Cardinals traded for Holliday a week before the 2009 nonwaiver trade deadline, hoping the free-agent-to-be would fall in love with St. Louis and decide to stay. The plan worked. Holliday agreed to a seven-year https://www.storebengals.com/Shawn_Williams_Jersey.NFL , $120 million contract, a deal that worked out well for both sides; the slugger hit at least 20 homers in six of the seven years and the Cardinals made the playoffs in six of those seven years. They won the 2011 World Series, with Holliday batting .435 in the NLCS to help them reach the Fall Cla sic.3. Angels sign Vladimir GuerreroWhen: Jan. 14, 2004Need to know: The Baseball Hall of Fames cla s of 2018 will be announced Jan. 24, and Guerrero is expected to be one of the inductees. That will replace what is probably his previous best January baseball day, back in 2004 when he chose to sign with the Angels (a five-year, $70 million deal) instead of the Mets or Orioles, the two other primary suitors. Guerrero won the AL MVP that season, blasting 39 homers to go with 126 RBIs, 124 runs scored and a .337 batting average.4. Rangers sign Adrian BeltreWhen: Jan. 5, 2011Need to know: Beltre signed free-agent deals in back-to-back Januarys, actually. In January 2010, he signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox, intent on proving an injury-marred final season in Seattle wasnt his new normal. That worked well; he hit .321 with 28 homers in Boston, and in January 2011the Rangers gave him a five-year, $80 million deal with a vesting option in Year 6. That worked well for Texas, too, and the Rangers signed him to a two-year extension in April 2016. In his time wearing a Rangersuniform, Beltre has hit .308 with 184 homers and an .877 OPS, and e sentially secured his spot in Cooperstown.MORE: 5. Mets sign Carlos BeltranWhen: Jan. 13, 2005Need to know: Beltran was coming off an unbelievable postseason with the Astros in https://www.storebengals.com/Michael_Jordan_Jersey.NFL a dozen games through the NLDS and NLCS, the switch hitter popped eight home runs, stole six bases, hit .435 and posted a jaw-dropping 1.557 OPS. Oh, and he was just 27 years old. So, yeah, this was a huge get for the Mets (a seven-year, $119 million contract). His first season in New York was underwhelming, but he averaged 6.8 WAR from 2006 to 2008 before injuries zapped his production his last few seasons with the Mets.6. Marlins sign Ivan RodriguezWhen: Jan. 28, 2003Need to know: Rodriguez was the perfect fit with this Marlins team. In his one year with Florida, the veteran had an .843 OPS and 85 RBIs, but more importantly was a leader in the teams unexpected playoff push. The Marlins snagged the NL wild card, then beat the Giants in the NLDS (Pudge hit .353) and the Cubs in the NLCS (he hit .321 and had 10 RBIs in the seven- game series). He had hits in five of the six World Series games as Florida stunned the Yankees to win the title.7. Nationals sign Max ScherzerWhen: Jan. 21, 2015Need to know: The Nationals already had an outstanding rotation, which was why the addition of Scherzer was a bit of a surprise. He has been everything theycould have hoped for in the first few seasons of his seven-year, $210 million deal, because, yknow, its hard to do much more than win back-to-back Cy Young awards.8. Devil Rays sign Carlos PenaWhen: Jan. 29, 2007Need to know: Penas once-promising MLB career was faltering; he was released by the Tigers in March 2006, was released by the Yankees in August 2006 and then played 18 games for the Red Sox at the tail end of the season. The Devil Rays yes, the Devil was still there brought him in as a nonroster invitee, and Pena immediately clicked with manager Joe Maddon. Pena hit 46 homers for Tampa Bay in 2007, with a .411 on-base percentage https://www.storebengals.com/Anthony_Munoz_Jersey.NFL and 7.2 rWAR. He popped 31 homers in 2008 as the franchise authored its incredible turnaround and made the World Series Pena hit three homers in the ALCS against the Red Sox and then hit 39 more homers in 2009.9. Astros sign Roger ClemensWhen: Jan. 19 https://www.storebengals.com/Germaine_Pratt_Jersey.NFL , 2004Need to know: Clemens was 40 years old, and he had long ago announced his intention to retire after the 2003 season with the Yankees. But his friend Andy Pettitte signed with Houston in December 2003, and the lefty talked Clemens into joining him in Clemens home state. The big right-hander wound up signing three consecutive one-year deals with the Astros (compiling a 2.40 ERA in 84 starts) before finishing his career in 2007 with the Yankees.10. Dodgers sign Kenley JansenWhen: Jan. 10, 2017Need to know: Its hard to imagine the Dodgers bullpen without Jansen anchoring the ninth inning. The Marlins made a big push to sign the right-handed closer, but he eventually chose to return to Los Angeles and authored his best season a 1.32 ERA, 41 saves in 42 opportunities and a 15.57 K/BB ratio. It's worth noting, too, that the Dodgers also signed Brandon Morrow in January to a one- year deal, and Morrow turned in a brilliant season as a late-inning stopper for the Dodgers. Pretty good month.MORE: 11. Rangers sign Yu DarvishWhen: Jan. 18, 2012Need to know: The Rangers won the right to negotiate with Darvish
