ACNH Bells, a Nintendo game released in March 2020, was
the most popular game in quarantine. More than 31 million
Nintendo Switch players around the world have fallen in
love with the life simulation game's tropical island
vibes, endearing characters, and day-to-day pastoral
grind, which served as a welcome respite from the chaotic
world outside their windows since its lockdown launch.
One year later, however, many of the game's most ardent
supporters are beginning to see through the façade. As
they become accustomed to their daily routine of fishing,
planting flowers, and conversing with their neighbors,
many of the game's flaws, which were previously obscured
by that distinct new-game smell, have come to light—and
Nintendo has made no effort to remedy the situation.
Taking a quick look at the reactions to Wednesday's
seasonal event update, which was basically a rehash of
the same tedious event from last year, reveals how
dissatisfied many of Animal Crossing's most devoted fans
are with the current state of the ongoing game:
Animal Crossing players have been clamoring for various,
much-needed quality-of-life improvements and overhauls
since the game's release last year, and Nintendo's
apparent refusal to acknowledge these requests has fueled
much of the dissatisfaction. The lack of content in
comparison to previous Animal Crossing entries, as well
as the time-consuming management systems, which were once
easy to overlook because of the game's relative newness,
have now become frustrating, and even a major turnoff for
those who helped make this one of Nintendo's most
successful releases ever. Further evidence of New
Horizons' enormous commercial impact can be found in the
fact that it is the second-highest selling game of all
time in Japan.
One of the most serious issues is that players are still
unable to craft more than one item at a time, despite
numerous requests for this feature. To meet up with
friends online, players must sit through an interminable
conversation with a chatty dodo, which fans have pleaded
with the developers to streamline. Construction
equipment, such as shovels and fishing rods, continues to
fail without warning, requiring players to stop what
they're doing and reassemble them multiple times. Fan-
favorite shops from previous generations of games, such
as Brewster's café and the attached nightclub hosted by
DJ K. K. Slider, are still absent from the new game.
Other beloved side characters, such as the fashionable
giraffe Gracie and amateur comedian Dr. Shrunk, are also
featured prominently.
Even as early as May of last year, fans were clamoring
for a patch that would address some of the issues they
were experiencing. During that time, some Animal Crossing
players created an astonishingly well-edited video that
reads like a wish list of improvements to the game's
quality-tickets">ACNH nmt , none of which have yet to
appear in New Horizons, even a year after the game was
released. The video has received more than one million
views so far:
Despite the fact that Nintendo appears to be ignoring
these calls for more user-friendly redesigns, the company
continues to release free monthly updates for the game,
such as the Mario crossover event from February, which
added Mushroom Kingdom–inspired items to the game. These
are, without a doubt, welcome. Nonetheless, this sporadic
stream of new-ish content has done little to assuage fans
who continue to doubt that Nintendo is paying attention.

second year on the market and players begin to experience
repeat events, it appears that the company will need to
offer twists and larger-scale additions in order to keep
all players engaged.
If you compare the list of New Horizons' offerings to
those of its predecessor, Animal Crossing: New Leaf on
the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo Switch game does not
appear to be a particularly attractive option for
Nintendo Switch players. That game went years without
receiving any significant updates until 2016, when
Nintendo released a free content patch that introduced a
slew of new characters, events, and locations to the
game. Three and a half years have elapsed since New Leaf
was released, and players have been content with what has
been provided. Are there new horizons? This is true even
with the regular free updates that are ostensibly
intended to keep the game interesting. The number of
compelling reasons to return to a game that promises to
continue playing even when you are not present is
diminishing.
