PHILADELPHIA -- Steve Mason and the Flyers are playing
their best hockey of the season heading into the Olympic
break. colon-jersey-c-33/">Bartolo Colon Jersey . Its a
break team chariman Ed Snider would love to abolish.
Mason stopped 38 shots, and Mark Streit and Michael Raffl
scored goals, leading the Philadelphia Flyers past the
Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Thursday night. Mason blanked
Detroit 5-0 on Jan. 28 and stopped the Los Angeles Kings
2-0 on Feb. 1. He was only 2:50 away from his fourth
shutout of the season, and third in five games, when
Nathan MacKinnon beat him for his 21st goal of the
season. Mason stopped his first 33 shots. Mason, who
signed a three-year extension last month, has been the
key reason the Flyers have been able to hang around in
the Eastern Conference playoff race. With one game left
before the break, the Flyers recent spurt could stall
because of the Olympics. "I hate them," said Snider, the
Flyers founder. He added: "Its ridiculous, the whole
thing is ridiculous. I dont care if it was in
Philadelphia, I wouldnt want to break up the league. I
think its ridiculous to take three weeks off, or however
long it is, in the middle of the season. It screws up
everything. .. How can anybody be happy breaking up their
season. No other league does it, why should we? Theres no
benefit to us whatsoever. If anything, I can only see
negatives." Reminded the Flyers reached the Stanley Cup
finals during the last Olympics in 2010, Snider laughed.
"Maybe I like them," he said. "I forget about that."
Claude Giroux, who scored an empty-netter with 20 seconds
left, has plenty of time to rest during the break. He was
snubbed Thursday by Hockey Canada when Martin St. Louis
was picked as an injury replacement for his Tampa Bay
teammate Steven Stamkos. Steve Yzerman, the Canadians
executive director and Tampa Bays general manager, chose
St. Louis over Giroux and Pittsburghs James Neal. "Its a
farce," Snider said. "Hes one of the best players in the
game. Its ridiculous. Hes better than half the guys on
that team. "Anybody that thinks that Claude Giroux doesnt
belong on the Canadian team, they dont know anything
about hockey as far as Im concerned. Its politics, to a
certain degree. He had to pick his own guy. His own guy
is good, but Claude is better." The Avalanche, who lost
5-1 to the New York Rangers on Tuesday, couldnt solve
Mason until it was too late. The Avalanche called timeout
with 1:27 left and pulled goalie Semyon Varlamov in a
last-gasp effort at the tying goal. It didnt work. The
Flyers scored in the second period, when Streits shot
from the blue line was deflected by a defenceman and
wobbled past Varlamov for his eighth goal. Streit is
heading to his fourth Olympics for Switzerland. The
Flyers got a scare when centre Brayden Schenn was checked
from behind into the boards by Patrick Bordeleau. Schenn
quickly got on his skates, and his teammates went after
Bordeleau behind the net. Bordeleau threw his right elbow
into Schenns back and the Flyer thumped the board, and
then hit the ice. Bordeleau was hit with 5 minutes for
checking from behind and a game misconduct. Colorado
coach Patrick Roy was red faced and furious as he argued
with the officials that the hit didnt merit an ejection.
Masons play picked up after a recent pep talk from Hall
of Fame goalie Bernie Parent. Mason stopped 14 shots in
the first period and made the save of the night in the
second when he robbed Gabriel Landeskog with a glove save
from his rear. "I think we didnt make it hard enough for
him in the first 55 minutes," Landeskog said. "I think
the last five, we were in his face, banging rebounds, and
trying to bang one home there and made it hard on him. We
started throwing pucks from different angles and tough
angles and what not." Mason posted a 1.51 goals-against-
average over his last four starts, stopped 95 per cent of
his shots and had two shutouts. "The job as starting
goalie every night is to make sure we provide stability
back there, and thats what Im trying to do," he said.
Raffls seventh goal of the season, off a nice pass by
Sean Couturier from behind the net, early in the third
was the insurance the Flyers needed to win their third
straight. NOTES: The Flyers had a video tribute and a
moment of silence for former coach and general manager
Keith Allen. Allen died Tuesday. He was 90. "I love Keith
Allen," Snider said. ... Lauren Hart, the daughter of
longtime former Flyers broadcaster Gene Hart, sang "God
Bless America," alternating lyrics with Kate Smith, who
was on a video image. Smiths rendition of the song has
been a rallying anthem for the Flyers since the mid-
1970s. markakis-jersey-c-5/">Nick Markakis Jersey . It was
well worth the wait. Manning and the Denver Broncos
waited eight long months, then another 33 minutes to get
the season started because of a lightning storm.

hope an upcoming stretch of home games will be enough to
get the club into the postseason. With the Toronto Raptors
celebrating their 20th anniversary season in 2014-15,
Josh Lewenberg and TSN.ca take a look back at the
franchises first two decades with weekly Top Five lists,
counting down the standout and signature players and
moments in team history. 5. Keon Clark For a host of
reasons, many of them unrelated to basketball, Clark
never reached his immense potential as a defender in the
NBA. That said, his best years came in Toronto, where he
served as a rim protector off the bench for a pair of
Raptors playoff teams. Those two teams he was a part of
both rank in the franchises top three seasons in
defensive efficiency. A long and athletic shot blocker,
Clark is a big reason why. The 6-foot-11 centre swatted
1.8 shots per game as a member of the Raptors - the
second-highest mark in team history. He owns the
franchises best ever defensive rating. 4. Amir Johnson
Johnson has anchored the Raptors defence for the better
part of the last five years and was a catalyst in the
teams drastic turnaround on that end after Dwane Casey
took over in 2011. Often unheralded for his work, the 6-
foot-9 forward has a way of changing games in subtle
ways, most of them on the defensive end, where his
versatility sets him apart. In addition to protecting the
rim, Johnson can step out and guard stretch bigs. He may
be the franchises best ever help defender, making up for
the mistakes of his teammates - including young centre
Jonas Valanciunas, who the Raptors envision being on this
list one day. After years of wear and tear - as a result
of playing through a myriad of injuries - Johnson has
lost a lot of his speed and athleticism, but remains a
plus defender thanks to his instincts. Hes almost always
where he needs to be. 3. Marcus Camby Camby will go down
as one of the NBAs all-time greatest shot blockers. The
caveat for the purposes of this list, however, is he
spent only two of his 17 seasons with the Raptors.
Selected with the second overall pick in one of the best
drafts ever, the Raptors were impatient with the lanky
centre, exchanging him for veteran help in Charles Oakley
-- a great defender in his own right. But even as a young
player who was injury prone and erratic offensively,
Camby made an immediate impact as a rim protector for a
couple of losing Raptors clubs. Camby blocked a
ridiculous 2.9 shots per game as a Raptor - by faar the
highest mark in franchise history - including an NBA-best
3. jersey-c-10/">Bob Uecker Jersey. 7 in his second and
final year with the team. He would go on to win the 2006-
07 Defensive Player of the Year award with Denver and
made four NBA All-Defensive teams (two first, two
second). 2. Antonio Davis Davis spent the bulk of his six
seasons as a Raptor playing undersized at the centre
position, but thanks to his toughness, positioning and
defensive knowhow he was rarely taken advantage of.
Although he earned All-Star recognition in 2001, most of
what made him effective, especially on defence, went
under the radar. Davis was a true workhorse and an
excellent individual and help defender in the low post,
anchoring some, if not the most efficient defensive teams
in the franchises history. He ranks fourth on the Raptors
all-time block list (405) and fifth in blocks per game
(1.3). 1. Doug Christie Christie is not only the
franchises best ever perimeter defender, he was among the
leagues elite stoppers at a time in which his position
was loaded with talented scorers to go up against almost
every night. At 6-foot-6, he had the size to guard three
positions on the floor. Although he wasnt especially fast
or athletic, he made up for it with his defensive
instincts. Impressively, Christie is the Raptors all-time
steals leader (664), totaling 112 more than second-place
Morris Peterson, despite appearing in 228 fewer games
with the team. Christie is the only player in club
history to average over two steals per game (2.1) during
his tenure and ranked top five in the league in that
category in three of his four full seasons with Toronto.
He didnt get recognized for his work on D until moving on
to Sacramento, where he was named to three NBA All-
Defensive second teams and one first team. Honourable
mention: Tracy McGrady, Donyell Marshall, Charles Oakley,
Jerome Williams, Anthony Parker, Kyle Lowry, Morris
Peterson, Alvin Williams, Kevin Willis, James Johnson,
Alvin Robertson, Michael Stewart Expert picks: Ryan
Wolstat, Toronto Sun 1. Amir Johnson - The stats dont
lie, covers for everyones mistakes 2. Doug Christie -
All-NBA caliber perimeter defender 3. Antonio Davis -
Undersized but extremely effective 4. Keon Clark -
Ridiculous shot blocker, was a great rim protector 5.
Charles Oakley - Tough, smart, always in the right place
