In the vibrant landscape of online multiplayer games, few
have captured the collective imagination quite like
Among Us. This
seemingly simple game of social deduction has transcended
its indie roots to become a global phenomenon, sparking
countless memes, friendships, and, let's be honest, a
fair few arguments. If you've ever wondered what all the
fuss is about, or you're a budding crewmate/impostor
looking to hone your skills, this article is your guide
to navigating the thrilling, frustrating, and utterly
addictive world of Among Us.
Introduction: The Premise of Paranoia
At its core, Among Us is a game of trust and betrayal set
aboard a space-faring vessel. Players are divided into
two teams: the majority are "Crewmates," tasked with
completing a series of mundane tasks around the ship to
ensure its operation. A smaller, hidden group are the
"Impostors," whose goal is to discreetly sabotage the
ship and eliminate the Crewmates without being
discovered. The beauty of the game lies in its simplicity
– no complex spellcasting or elaborate skill trees, just
pure human interaction, observation, and deception. The
tension is palpable, the accusations fly, and every
innocent bystander could be a cold-blooded killer.
Gameplay: A Dance of Tasks and Treachery
A typical round of Among Us unfolds in a captivating
cycle:
1. The Task Phase (Crewmates): As a Crewmate, your
primary objective is to complete your assigned tasks.
These range from swiping ID cards and wiring panels to
emptying garbage and fixing lights. These tasks are
crucial for victory, as completing all of them before the
Impostors kill enough Crewmates will win the game for
your team. While performing tasks, you're constantly
aware of your surroundings, keeping an eye out for
suspicious behavior, and trying to stay safe.
2. The Murder and Sabotage Phase (Impostors): If you're
an Impostor, your game is entirely different. Your goal
is to blend in, pretend to do tasks, and strategically
eliminate Crewmates. Impostors have unique abilities:
Kill: Eliminate a nearby Crewmate. There's a cooldown
period after each kill, preventing rapid-fire
assassinations.
Vent: Impostors can quickly traverse the map through
hidden vents, allowing for swift escapes after a kill or
strategic positioning.
Sabotage: Impostors can sabotage critical systems like
lights, communications, or oxygen. Sabotages create
chaos, disrupt Crewmate tasks, and can even lead to an
automatic Impostor victory if not fixed in time. They
also provide opportunities for isolated kills.
3. The Emergency Meeting/Body Report: When a body is
discovered, or a player suspects something amiss, an
emergency meeting is called. This is where the true heart
of Among Us lies. All surviving players are brought
together in the cafeteria to discuss, accuse, and defend.
Discussion: Players share information, describe what they
saw, and voice their suspicions. This is where
observation skills, memory, and persuasive arguments come
into play.
Voting: After a period of discussion, players vote to
eject who they believe is the Impostor. If a player
receives the majority of votes, they are ejected from the
ship. The game then reveals whether the ejected player
was indeed an Impostor or an innocent Crewmate.
Skipping: Players can also choose to "skip vote" if
they're unsure, preventing a potentially innocent
Crewmate from being ejected.
The game continues with these phases until either:
Crewmates win: All tasks are completed, or all Impostors
are ejected.
Impostors win: The number of Impostors equals the number
of Crewmates (meaning the Impostors can no longer be
voted out), or a critical sabotage (like oxygen
depletion) is not fixed in time.
Tips for Survival and Success:
Whether you're a diligent Crewmate or a cunning Impostor,
these tips will elevate your game:
For Crewmates:
Be Observant: Pay attention to who is where, when, and
with whom. Did someone seem to come out of nowhere? Did
you see anyone standing over a body without reporting?
Do Your Tasks: While not as flashy as catching an
Impostor, completing tasks is how Crewmates win. Don't be
"task-averse."
Travel in Groups (Sometimes): While grouping can deter
Impostors from killing, a large group can also mask an
Impostor who is just waiting for the perfect opportunity.
Smaller groups of 2-3 can be effective for mutual
protection and alibi generation.
Use Visual Tasks as Proof: Some tasks have visual
animations (e.g., MedBay Scan, Vitals, Weapons
Asteroids). Performing these in front of others can prove
your innocence.
Communicate Clearly: When reporting, be concise and
provide as much detail as possible: "I saw Red vent in
Electrical," or "Cyan was near the body, but I didn't see
them kill."
Don't Blindly Trust: Even your closest friend might be
the Impostor. Question everything.
For Impostors:
Blend In: Pretend to do tasks. Stand over a task for a
reasonable amount of time. Don't just stand still in a
room.
Be Patient: Don't rush kills. Wait for isolated targets
or opportunities created by sabotages.
Master the Vent System: Vents are your best friend. Use
them for quick escapes after a kill, or to get to a
sabotage location unseen.
Learn Sabotage Timing: Use sabotages strategically. Cut
lights to create chaos for a kill, or call an O2 sabotage
to force Crewmates to spread out.
Frame Others: If you see two Crewmates together, kill one
and vent away. When the body is reported, you can accuse
the remaining Crewmate.
Develop an Alibi: Even if it's a lie, have a story ready
for where you were and what you were doing.
Lie Convincingly: The art of deception is paramount.
Sound confident, even when you're making things up.
Don't Overkill: Killing too quickly or in front of too
many people will get you caught.
Conclusion: The Enduring Appeal of Deception
Among Us is more than just a game; it's a social
experiment in a digital wrapper. It tests our powers of
observation, our ability to articulate, and our
willingness to trust – or betray. Whether you're laughing
at a ridiculous accusation, meticulously tracking
suspects, or executing a perfectly timed double kill, the
game offers endless moments of excitement and amusement.
It's a testament to simple mechanics combining to create
profound gameplay, proving that sometimes, the most
engaging experiences are those that tap into the very
core of human interaction. So gather your friends,
sharpen your wits, and dive into the thrilling world
of Among Us. Just try not to get vented.
