The game Diablo 2 wriggled its way out of Hell and into
my heart when I was fourteen years old, and it forever
altered the course of my life. One could not have asked
for a more rewarding experience than marching through
impenetrably dark dungeons, hacking up demons, and
witnessing things explode in a shower of gibs and loot as
a teen metalhead on occasion. I thought

was unbeatable at the time. I was
wrong. I was completely wrong. In fact, Diablo 3 was
released more than a decade after its predecessor, and it
was unable to compete with it in terms of both graphics
and gameplay. It was a little too blazingly bright for my
taste. It's far too simple to be effective in this
situation. However, even during the most intense phase of
my obsession with Diablo 3, I always considered it to be
the second-best game I had ever played in the series.

In the PlayStation Store, you can now purchase Diablo 2:
Resurrected, which was previously unavailable. In many
ways, this is the same game that I've admired for years,
though there have been a few cosmetic improvements, as
well as some mostly optional quality of life
enhancements, thrown in for good measure for the sake of
variety. As soon as Marius's narration began in the
opening cutscene, the hairs on the back of my neck stood
up and felt as if they were trying to jump out of my
skin, which I found to be extremely terrifying. Aside
from that, what happened to the first Greetings, Stranger
you mentioned earlier in the Rogue Encampment? Using my
hands, I clapped my hands together, pretending I was a
beached sea lion on the sand. After that, it was all
downhill from there on out for the rest of the day.

As a teenager (at least when it came to role-playing
games), I have no recollection of any of the aspects of
this classic role-playing game that I used to enjoy, and
I didn't have terrible taste in video games (at least not
when it came to RPGs), but things have changed
dramatically in the last 20 years. The result of this has
also shifted my own expectations in some ways. One of the
most appealing aspects of some remasters is that they
allow you to relive something that was either a logical
endpoint or the absolute pinnacle of its genre at the
time of its original release—something that was truly
unique at the time of its original release. According to
the findings of the study, the additions and growth that
we've seen in games such as Torchlight II, Grim Dawn,
Path of Exile, and yes, Diablo 3, have caused the 2000
classic to feel a little stale when compared to the newer
games.

It's a frustrating experience moving my creepy old
necromancer around because the game's stamina bar is
depleted when you run and the grid-based movement makes
turning around look and feel clunky. The transition from
a smooth ARPG like Diablo 3 to something like this is
disorienting, even if I don't recall any of these things
and none of them appeared to be issues when I played the
game in 2000. Getting irritated by the mere act of
writing about the energy bar has triggered a new round of
rage. It's a complete and utter disaster! As opposed to
other games, in Dark Souls, where it is inextricably
linked to combat, dictating the flow of battles and
delivering those thrilling moments when you risk
everything on one last attack, knowing that it could be
your last. The fact that you are sluggish when it comes
to running is all that this signifies. It is something I
despise to the depths of my being.

Minor irritations can accumulate over time and cause
discomfort. Just to name a few issues, there's the shaky
pathfinding, the ease with which you can become entangled
in detritus during a fight, and the way that objects can
obscure your view of both your enemies and your own
character's movements. These issues were apparent as
early as the technical alpha, but I had hoped, perhaps
naively, that some of these issues would have been ironed
out before the game's official release. They haven't
followed through on their promise yet.

What about the actual process of developing the
personality of your fictional character? Initial
impressions were that the ability trees in Diablo 2
offered significantly more variety and a greater number
of options than the ability trees in Diablo 1. When put
to the test, this simply does not hold up under close
examination and consideration. You're often just putting
points into things that incrementally increase the power
of an ability, or even worse, putting points into
something you don't care about at all in order to get to
something you do care about later on down the line.
