points in the final 10 minutes to help the No. 7
Villanova pull away from Illinois, 73-59, in Game 1 of
the Jimmy V Classic from Madison Square Garden. Daniel
Ochefu and Darrun Hilliard both scored 12 points for
Villanova (9-0), which improved to 3-0 in New York this
season. The Wildcats beat VCU and Michigan -- both ranked
teams at the time -- at Barclays Center earlier this
season to win the Legends Classic. Josh Hart added 10
points off the bench. The Wildcats are one of just 10
undefeated teams in the nation despite not having a
single 20- point scorer this season. Illinois (7-2) fell

an efficient effort from Wichita State that carried the
11th-ranked Shockers to a 77-68 victory over previously
undefeated Seton Hall. Baker finished 9-of-11 from the
field and hit all three of his 3-point tries, while
Darius Carter recorded 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and
added 12 rebounds for Wichita State (6-1). Fred VanVleet
contributed 18 points and eight assists to the Shockers
22nd straight win at Koch Arena. The Pirates (7-1)
entered the matchup as one of only 11 remaining Division
I teams with an unblemished record, but werent able to
handle the step up in competition in their toughest test
to date. Seton Hall did get a game-high 23 points out of

Iowa State to a 73-56 win over UMKC Tuesday. Dejean-
Jones paced all scorers, and Monte Morris chipped in 13
points with five assists and three steals for the
Cyclones (6-1). Georges Niang was only 1-of-4 from the
field, but he finished the game with nine points, seven
rebounds and seven assists. Frank Williams Jr. led UMKC
(3-7) with 14 points and added a pair of steals. He was
followed closely by Collin Jennings with 11 points off
the bench, including 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Martez Harrison contributed 10 points and five boards.

and Steve Vasturia all scored 19 points as No. 25 Notre
Dame shot the lights out in a 93-67 rout of Mount St.
Marys on Tuesday. The Irish (9-1) snuck into the top-25
this week with an overtime victory over nationally-ranked
Michigan State and have won five in a row since losing to
Providence on Nov. 23. They entered Tuesdays game with
the best field goal percentage in the nation (55.8
percent) and bettered it by making 59.0 percent of their
shots. Demetrius Jackson added 15 points for Notre Dame,
while Chris Martin led Mount St. Marys (2-5) with 19
points on the strength of five 3-pointers.

have to look far to be reminded of the San Jose Sharks
playoff collapse against the Los Angeles Kings. His
surgically repaired right hand still has scars from last
months surgery, and the recovery has been slow. He
expects the hand, injured in a fight with Kings centre
Mike Richards, to be OK by training camp. And Couture
works out with Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, who was set
to have his day with the Stanley Cup on Friday. Doughty
doesnt chirp his good friend, but that doesnt stop
Couture from thinking about the painful first-round
series loss. "I think every time I see hockey on TV or
read about it in the paper," he said. The Sharks were in
command of the series, up three games to none. But they
proceeded to become the just the fourth team in NHL
history to blow that lead. The Kings won the Cup, and the
Sharks were left to wonder what went wrong. Couture
doesnt ponder what he and his teammates couldve done
differently. The thoughts are more simple than that. "I
just think about how much it hurts," he said Thursday
night at Dominic Moores Smashfest charity event. "The
feelings arent going to go away — probably never. Its
just something that sticks with you for a long time." In
time, Couture thinks the collapse should serve as
motivation for the Sharks who remain. For now, at least,
that includes captain Joe Thornton and veteran winger
Patrick Marleau, whose new contracts start next season
and include full no-move clauses. San Jose general
manager Doug Wilson has talked about rebuilding and going
younger. In the process the Sharks traded 38-year-old
defenceman Dan Boyles free-agent rights, traded 34-year-
old defenceman Brad Stuart and bought out 33-year-old
winger Marty Havlat. In free agency, the Shaarks signed
enforcer John Scott in an effort to "act as a deterrent
and help keep teams and opposing players honest,"
according to Wilson.

with Wilson this summer but said he had not been
specifically asked to increase his leadership role. "I

native said. "I think each year you play more with an
organization youre expected to take on more of that role.
Those are kind of the things that dont have to be said."
Couture will begin his new US$30-million, five-year
contract this season and hopes that his tenure in San
Jose is a long one. With that, he anticipates a larger
role in the locker-room and on the ice. "I think I
learned a lot from the leaders on our team in San Jose
the last couple of years and taking small things from
them and try to be a leader as much as I can with our
team with our young guys," Couture said. "Weve got a lot
of leaders on that team, a lot of veteran players, so I
