MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City consigned
beleaguered West Ham to a second hammering inside four
days by romping to a 6-0 victory in the first leg of
their League Cup semifinal on Wednesday, with Alvaro
Negredo leading the rout with a clinical hat trick.

Wembley Stadium -- and a first appearance in the final
since 1976 -- couldnt be any closer for free-scoring City
after an embarrassingly one-sided contest that also
featured two goals from Edin Dzeko and another by Yaya
Toure. The result heaped further humiliation on West Ham
and its under-fire manager Sam Allardyce, who saw his
relegation-threatened side lose 5-0 at second-tier
Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday. "Its not
unique to us is it?" Allardyce said. "Manchester City
have done this to Tottenham and Manchester United. We
knew they had to have an off night and they didnt."
Sunderland beat Manchester United 2-1 on Tuesday in the
first leg of the other semifinal. The second legs are in
two weeks time. Allardyce had fielded a shadow side full
of kids and fringe squad members against Forest to ensure
his main players were fully recharged for this match. It
proved to be a complete waste of time. They were
steamrollered by a City team that took its goal tally at
the Etihad this season to 59 in 15 games. At times, it
was embarrassing and downright cruel as the hosts toyed
with their opponents, with Negredo moving onto 18 for the
season in his first year at City. "Playing better than
the way he did today is not easy," Pellegrini said of
Negredo. "He really played a complete game." City was
everything United wasnt against Sunderland: sharp, full
of movement and unforgiving in front of goal. The gap
between the two Manchester rivals hasnt been so great in
a generation. Negredo and Toure were at the heart of
everything for City and they combined beautifully for the
first goal in the 12th minute. Toure floated a long pass
through the middle of West Hams open defence, the ball
dropping over the shoulder of Negredo who buried a first-
time volley into the corner. The Spain striker made it 2-
0 in the 26th by sprinting onto Dzekos reverse pass and
delivering a finish on the slide, and Toure inflicted
more punishment just before halftime, running from
halfway toward back-pedaling defender Roger Johnson and
calmly stroking a shot low into the centre of the goal.
Johnson was signed from third-tier Wolverhampton
Wanderers on Monday to ease West Hams defensive injury
crisis that has deprived Allardyce of all his centre
backs. He couldnt have endured a more miserable debut.
The misery was far from over for West Ham, either.
Negredo completed his second hat trick for City with a
snapshot in the 49th after David Silvas low cross
deflected into his path and strike partner Dzeko got in
on the act on the hour mark, poking home a near-post
finish from Gael Clichys centre. As Allardyce looked on
gloomily from the technical area as the rain poured down,
Dzeko added the sixth in the 89th with a vicious left-
footed shot into the top corner. Allardyce was given a
vote of confidence from West Hams co-chairmen after the
Forest defeat but he looked a beaten man here. "However
hard they tried, and they did, was not good enough to
stop the quality and talents Man City have bought on the
finance that is available to them," Allardyce said. City
has won all 12 of its home games in domestic competition
this season and scored 92 goals in 31 games in all
competitions. "We have not arrived in the final but we
are very near," Pellegrini said. "It is very important to
continue in all the competitions playing the way we did

The Union looked to have grabbed a big win in the 88th
minute when Amobi Okugo finally put the hosts in front.
But a terrible giveaway by Union goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi
handed Earnshaw the equalizer in the second minute of
stoppage time, keeping the Union two points back of
fifth-place Red Bull New York for the final playoff spot
in the Eastern Conference.

Olympic teammate Zach Parise could stop T.J. Oshie in a
shootout. Oshie and Alexander Steen scored shootout goals
and the St. Louis Blues took over the top spot in the NHL
standings with a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on
Sunday night. In his first shootout since his memorable
Olympic performance against Russia, Oshie beat Ilya
Bryzgalov -- a Russian who wasnt on the team that lost to
Oshie and Team USA in Sochi-- over his shoulder in the
first round. Steen sealed the win in the following round
after the Blues Brian Elliott turned away Parise and
Mikko Koivu. "I think I was talking to Zach about that
move tonight over in Sochi and he might have told Bryz
what it was," Oshie said about his backhand-to-forehand
move. "It seemed like he had me and I got a little lucky.
It mustve just squeaked inside the post. I got a little
fortunate on that one, but Ill keep taking them." The
Wild fell behind 2-0 early, but tied it with second-
period goals from Jason Pominville and Matt Moulson. Not
many teams are able to come back on St. Louis, which only
allows 26.4 shots and 2.22 goals per game. "I think that
they thought they were going to take it to us physically
and I think our guys responded to that," Wild coach Mike
Yeo said. "I think we got into it, we started being
physical on their defencemen. We really started to get in
our game and from that point on, I thought we were the
better team." Oshie and Carlo Colaiacovo scored on the
second and third shots of the game for St. Louis. It was
Colaiacovos first goal since Feb. 11, 2012, a span of 42
games. Bryzgalov had 21 saves in his first start for
Minnesota since coming over in a trade with Edmonton on
Tuesday. Like Oshie, Bryzgalov also thought he had the
save in the shootout. "You know, pretty much I almost had
it. I dont know how he raised it over the shoulder," he
said. "I thought there was no way to go for him. I was
completely surprised he scored on that one." The "legend"
of Oshie in shootout situations continues to get bigger,
even among teammates. "When I see Osh going in on a
shootout, I kind of giggle," Blues centre David Backes
said. "I tolld him afterward that the goalies are
starting to play like soccer goalies because theyre just
guessing left or right.

scored at 3:11 to make it 2-1. Moulson tied it 4 minutes
later with his first goal in a Wild sweater since being

Koivu intercepted a clearing attempt and zipped the puck
to Moulson, who was in front of the net and knocked it
past Brian Elliott. Elliott stopped 17 shots and kept the
game tied at 2 with a lunging stick save to deny Mikael
Granlund with 13 minutes left in the third period. "I
tried to kind of charge him because I thought he was
going to tip it," Elliott said. "He managed to stop and
pull it around me, so it was desperation. I try to rob
the guys in practice and sometimes it pays off when you
can make those stick saves in games." Granlund was again
denied by Elliott from in close early in the overtime
session. The Blues have won 16 in a row against the
Central Division and are now 18-0-1 in division play.
Theyve beaten Minnesota eight straight times, outscoring
the Wild 25-10. The Wild are 14-6-2 since Jan. 2, but
lost their second straight after a five-game winning
streak. Both teams played Saturday night and appeared
tired at the end of the third period and in overtime.
Theres still a ways to go, but both teams could end up
facing each other in the opening round of the playoffs.
"Its a team that, in all reality, we could be squaring
off against in the playoffs too," Parise said. "I know
theres a long time until that, but I thought we matched
up well against them. We like the way we played. Some
great opportunities at the end, just wouldnt go for us."
