Shanghai is often introduced through its futuristic
skyline, luxury shopping streets, and crowded landmarks,
but Xuhui offers a more layered version of the city.
Located in the southwest of central Shanghai, the
district combines historic neighborhoods, commercial
centers, universities, art spaces, riverside paths, and
ordinary residential streets. It does not depend on one
dramatic attraction. Instead, it rewards visitors who
enjoy seeing how a city changes from one block to the
next.To get more news about shanghai.net/en/news/xuhui-planning-a-festive-time-for-

The strongest feature of Xuhui is its variety. Around
Wukang Road and the Hengshan-Fuxing area, tree-lined
streets frame historic villas, apartment buildings,
cafés, bakeries, and independent shops. The architecture
gives the neighborhood a slower and more intimate
atmosphere than Shanghai’s major business districts.

Wukang Road is a nationally recognized historic and
cultural street lined with protected buildings
representing several architectural styles. However, its
real attraction is not limited to famous façades. The
pleasure comes from noticing balconies, doorway details,
neighborhood gardens, bicycles, small storefronts, and
the contrast between carefully preserved buildings and
everyday local life.

Xujiahui presents another side of the district. It is one
of Shanghai’s established commercial and transportation
centers, filled with malls, restaurants, offices,
electronics retailers, and busy metro connections. Yet
the area also contains an important collection of
cultural buildings connected with Shanghai’s scientific,
educational, and religious history.

Xujiahui Origin, described by official tourism sources as
an open urban scenic area, brings historic architecture
and modern public spaces together. This combination makes
Xujiahui especially useful for travelers who want
shopping convenience without giving up cultural depth.

The West Bund is perhaps Xuhui’s most convincing example
of urban renewal. Former industrial waterfront spaces
have been transformed into museums, galleries, lawns,
walking routes, and public gathering areas beside the
Huangpu River. Contemporary art venues now stand
alongside reminders of the district’s industrial past.

In my view, the West Bund is one of the best places in
Shanghai for a late-afternoon walk. Unlike attractions
designed around a single monument or commercial complex,
it provides space to slow down. Visitors can exercise,
watch the river, explore an exhibition, or simply sit
outdoors without feeling pressured to purchase something.

As a travel destination, Xuhui performs extremely well
for atmosphere, walkability, and diversity. Its main
weakness is that its attractions are spread across
several zones. Wukang Road, Xujiahui, Longhua, Shanghai
Botanical Garden, and the West Bund do not form one
compact sightseeing circuit. Visitors who arrive without
a plan may spend too much time traveling between
locations.

Crowds can also reduce the charm of popular streets,
particularly around famous photography spots and
fashionable cafés on weekends. Wukang Road is most
enjoyable early in the morning, when its architecture is
easier to appreciate and the pavements are less
congested.

My overall rating for Xuhui is 8.8 out of 10. It may not
be the best choice for someone determined to see
Shanghai’s most famous landmarks in a single day. For a
second visit or a longer stay, however, it can be more
satisfying than the heavily promoted tourist zones. It
feels polished without becoming artificial, fashionable
without completely losing its residential character, and
historic without functioning like an open-air museum.

Spending depends on the type of experience you choose.
Walking through the historic neighborhoods and enjoying
the waterfront can cost almost nothing. Cafés, design
shops, premium restaurants, private exhibitions, and
boutique hotels can quickly increase the budget.

Visitors should avoid treating every fashionable venue as
essential. One carefully selected coffee shop, one
museum, and one memorable meal will usually provide a
better experience than rushing through several expensive
businesses simply because they are popular online.

Xuhui is also worth considering as an accommodation base.
Areas around Hengshan Road and Xujiahui provide
convenient metro access, restaurants, shops, and evening
activities. Streets closer to the former French
Concession offer greater architectural character and a
quieter atmosphere. Before booking, check the property’s
actual walking distance from a metro station because
Xuhui covers a large geographical area.

The district is particularly suitable for independent
travelers, architecture enthusiasts, photographers, art
lovers, café explorers, runners, couples, families, and
business visitors seeking a comfortable central base.
First-time tourists with only one free day may prioritize
the Bund and Old City. Travelers staying for three days
or longer should give Xuhui serious attention.

The best way to explore Xuhui is to select one area for
each half-day. Spend a morning walking around Wukang Road
and its surrounding residential streets. Use the
afternoon for Xujiahui’s cultural buildings and shopping
centers. Reserve another evening for the West Bund, where
museums, industrial heritage, and riverside scenery
create a completely different atmosphere. Official city
routes similarly connect historical architecture,
commercial spaces, cultural institutions, and waterfront
attractions.

Xuhui’s appeal is subtle but lasting. It presents
Shanghai not only as a global metropolis, but also as a
city of shaded pavements, reused factories, neighborhood
cafés, libraries, galleries, and lived-in history. For
travelers who value texture over spectacle, Xuhui is one
of Shanghai’s most rewarding districts.
