NEW ORLEANS -- The Saints and Jonathan Goodwin have
agreed to a one-year contract bringing the veteran centre
back to New Orleans, the club announced Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Goodwin has spent the past three seasons
with San Francisco, playing in three straight NFC title
games and a Super Bowl. Goodwin played for New Orleans
from 2006 to 2010, starting the last three of those
seasons. He was named to a Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl
in the 2009 season. His new deal is worth $955,000, a
person familiar with negotiations told The Associated
Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because
financial terms were not released. The Saints also signed
defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick to a one-year
contract, general manager Mickey Loomis said. Prior to
the re-acquisition of Goodwin, second-year pro Tim Lelito
and undrafted rookie Matt Armstrong were the top
candidates to take over the Saints starting centre job,
which was vacated by Brian de la Puente when he left for
Chicago in free agency. The experience of the 6-foot-3,
318-pound Goodwin, a 12-year veteran, will give him an
edge. Lelito saw limited action last season, but only as
a reserve guard, while his work as a backup centre was
limited to practice. At the same time, the Saints see the
6-4, 315-pound Lelito as a promising prospect and also
have asserted that a young centre can thrive in their
system, in part because quarterback Drew Brees calls out
the bulk of blocking adjustments at the line of scrimmage
and in part because whoever plays centre will have a pair
of veteran Pro Bowlers on either side of him in guards
Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs. However, because off-season
practices do not involve full contact, it has been
difficult for coaches to fully evaluate how ready Lelito
is to be a regular centre. "Tim is someone that has
handled the transition right now pretty well," coach Sean
Payton said last week. "But he is going to have to, when
we get into training camp, do it in a live setting." Like
Lelito, the 6-2, 302-pound Armstrong played at Grand
Valley State. Last season, he was named by the Rimington
Award committee as the nations top Division II centre.
Evans is the only starter on the offensive line who also
started during Goodwins last season in New Orleans.
Goodwin was teammates with Zach Strief for five seasons,
but Strief did not take over as the starter at right
tackle until 2011, the year Goodwin left for San
Francisco. On the left side of the line are Grubbs, who
was acquired as a free agent in 2012, and tackle Terron
Armstrong, who was drafted in 2013. The 6-4, 305-pound
Deaderick is a four-year NFL veteran who has played in 47
career games with 15 starts. He joined the NFL as New
Englands seventh-round pick in 2010 and spent three
seasons with the Patriots. Last season, he played for
Jacksonville, appearing in 13 games. He has been credited
with 50 tackles in his career, along with 5.5 sacks,
three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two passes
defenced.

Federer is enjoying the good life. At 33, he has 17 Grand
Slam titles and a family of four children after his wife
gave birth to twin boys in May. Now, as he plays in a
U.S. Open warm up at the Rogers Cup, he considers himself
"more laid back" than at any time in his career. "I see
the positive side of things today," Federer said. "When I
was younger I felt much more pressure. I felt like I had
to do what people said, and I would listen to everything.
Today I kind of go my pace, and I really enjoy it in the
process." Federer got off to a fine start in Toronto on
Tuesday night, advancing to the third round with a 6-2,
6-0 victory against Canadian wildcard Peter Polansky. The
second-seeded Swiss star is going for his third title of
the year. He still has "the determination to go out there
and work hard and still have the motivation, which I
think is something thats really, really important," said
former star Stefan Edberg, now Federers coach. "Its been
good to see him making some progress this year." Federer
does not feel the obligation to play as many tournaments
as he once did. He is ranked No. 3 and taking a simpler
approach to the game. "I feel like I dont really have to
prove anything to anybody, even though people are always
going to disagree with that," Federer said. "For me its
about how do I feel in practice, how is my motivation,
how am I actually really playing, how do I feel it,
rather than how is everybody else thinking they see and
know it. I can analyze it much more clearer today than I
ever have." Federer has seen plenty of changes in tennis
since turning pro in 1998. Back thenn, he said, there was
much more turnover between No.

players. Since February 2004, the top spot has rotated
among Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer
hasnt been No. 1 since 2012, but he spent a record 302
weeks there. Change also has come in the way rackets are
made and strung. "I think some tournament directors are
probably sick and tired of just the big-serving matches
where theres no rallies whatsoever, and it got very
physical and athletic from the back of the court," he
said. "And, in the process, we lost a lot of volley
players. "Coaches everywhere, around the world, have made
sure that their players are very good just forehand and
backhand players and good servers, but neglected probably
a little bit of volley play, even though I do believe
there is a place for it. But it became harder and harder
and everyone who had success was a baseline player.
"Clearly then, you inspire the next generation by doing
that. And I think now were again at a crossroads a little
bit where things are speeding up." But, for him, things
are slowing down. At his peak, he was counted on to do
news conferences in English, German and French. Federer
will still gladly do that or help build ticket sales for
a tournament. But hes also prepared to step back. "I feel
like less is more because people already know a lot about
me," he said. "And I think the stage is also for other
players to make a name for themselves." Still, theres an
opponent across the net. That never changes. "Its also
about improving at this stage of your career," Edberg
said. "There is still room for improvements."
