Heisman Watch, you better have put up some big numbers
Saturday. While the schedule gets a lot tougher (and a
lot better for fans) from here on out, for now the
contenders for college sports most prestigious individual
award had to prove they can show no mercy and dominate
lesser competition. Call it the “pad your stats”
portion of the season. The fight for the Heisman Watch
lead is tight between last years winner Johnny Manziel
and the consensus top NFL prospect at quarterback Teddy
Bridgewater. While neither put up astronomical stats
against their heavy underdog opponents of Week 4, they
showed enough to remain 1-2 in the Watch. Manziels
passing stats in Texas A&Ms win over SMU were far from
eye catching, 14-21 for 244 yards and one touchdown to
one interception, but he added 102 yards and two
touchdowns on the ground. Bridgewater meanwhile, threw
for just over 200 yards but had four touchdowns in
Louisvilles rout of Florida International. Both QBs were
granted early exits in the blowout wins. It was another
less than jaw dropping performance by Clemson senior Tajh
Boys as his Week 1 statement game win over Georgia slips
further from our memory. Boyd opened up ACC conference
play with a 244-yard, three touchdown performance in the
Tigers win over NC State.Had Oregon QB Marcus Mariota not
had a bye week, Boyd could have slipped for the third
consecutive week. As it were however, Mariota was off and
remains fourth in the Heisman Watch. Making the big jump
in the Watch this week was Baylor tailback Lache
Seastrunk. After starting the year outside of the Top 25,
the currently 19th-ranked Bears have looked more and more
explosive each week, and Seastrunk is a big reason why.
In the Bears big win over Louisiana-Monroe in Week 3,
Seastrunk tallied 156 yards and a touchdown on just 10
carries. He jumped Georgia running back Todd Gurley as
the top non-QB on the list. Falling out of the top five
was UCLA QB Brett Hundley. Considering his opponent, New
Mexico State, Hundleys 280 yards and three touchdowns to
two interceptions wasnt up to snuff to stay in the Top 5
of the Watch. Alabamas AJ McCarron followed the trend of
(somewhat) disappointing QB performances in the No. 1
ranked Crimson Tides win over Colorado State. McCarron
had 258 yards and just one touchdown to one interception.
And as Fresno State joined the Top 25 rankings for the
first time this season, so to does their QB Derek Carr
join the outer ranks of the Heisman Watch. Carr led the
Bulldogs to an important win over Boise State with 460
yards through the air and four touchdowns in one of the
