Although my natural hair care routine (which can be a
full-blown event in and of itself) is not the source of
my daily struggles as a woman who wears her hair in a
protective style, it is a contributing factor to those
difficulties.Being subjected to nothing more than
innocuous comments or suggestions about my hair on a
daily basis has become exhausting and frankly, quite
irritating to bear the brunt of it.Even though certain
questions or comments may appear innocuous at first
glance, they can be construed as microaggressions when
taken out of their context. As a result, we've put
together a list of nine problematic phrases that you
should avoid saying to people who have natural hair as a
result of this situation. As an additional point of
clarification, there is one other thing I would like to
say in its place.

In terms of how often you shampoo and condition your
hair, what is your routine?
The fact that this is one of the most frequently asked
questions when it comes to natural hair isn't surprising
at all.I don't think it needs to be said that whether you
have natural hair or not, you should never inquire about
someone's cleaning habits,
wigs">Kinky curly regardless of whether they have
natural hair or not. This question, when directed at Black
and Brown communities, contributes to the stereotype that
these communities do not practice good hygiene in
general, which is untrue in this case. Please allow me to
answer the question for you for the sake of your
convenience, and to avoid making the mistake of making
someone else feel uncomfortable by asking it in the first
place. Each individual has his or her own wash routine,
which can differ from one person to the next depending on
the individual.Hair is unique to each individual, as is
the texture of their hair, as well as the amount of
build-up (also known as porosity) that exists in their
strands. On the other hand, those who have coily or curly
hair wash their hair approximately one to two times per
week on average.

Do you object to me running my fingers through your hair?
Alexa will play the song Don't Touch My Hair by Solange
for you. Alexa is a virtual assistant. Is it time for you
to get your hair cut?For people with natural hair, this
is the million-dollar question that makes them feel as if
they're in the middle of an animal-themed zoo.We are not
a canine companion, nor are we a plush velvet couch to
curl up on after a long day at work.In spite of the fact
that you are welcome to look around, you are not
permitted to touch anything in the museum, as stated very
clearly on the signs that can be found throughout the
building.

This is, to put it mildly, incredibly comfortable to
wear.
Now that you've realized you made a mistake in number
two, you're giving us a backhanded compliment.What a mess
this has become!Stephanie Sengwe, an associate editor at
PureWow, explains that this phrase is particularly
offensive because it contains the following words:When it
comes to what's going on in front of
me, wigs">curly hair  I'm not even sure how to react to
the vast majority of the time.To put it another way,
should I take it as a compliment because you expected it
to be rough and it isn't, or should I just brush it off
as a misunderstanding? What are your thoughts on the
matter? Is it proper for me to take offense at something
like that? The idea that natural hair is difficult to
manage is another common misconception that has negative
consequences for people who have natural hair.

Your hair appears to be more attractive straight,
according to the stylist.
People are capable of such audacity, there's no doubt
about it.If you're like most people, you've probably
heard variations of this phrase suggesting that straight
hair is preferable to wavy, curly, or coily hair at some
point during your life.Hairstyles that are not fine,
straight, and/or simple (i.e., no twists, braids, or
other elaborate styles) have been shown to be
inappropriate for business attire on numerous occasions
throughout history.Numerous people continue to face
discrimination because of their hair, despite
technological advancements,
colored
wigs
in the workplace, at schools, and even within
their own social circles. These remarks served as the
impetus for the vast majority of us (including myself) to
take the step of becoming active participants in the
natural hair movement.Simply saying "Love the blowout!"
or something similar to express your feelings about
someone who has gotten a blowout is an appropriate way to
express yourself. You'll be able to express your
appreciation without implying that natural hair isn't
quite as good as synthetic hair, which is a major plus.
