De¡¯Anthony Thomas¡¯ punt return against the Steelers was a
trick play How about that 54-yard punt return by De¡¯Anthony Thomas during the
first quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on
Sunday? The one where he lost the handle on the ball while running down the
sideline
Mecole Hardman
Jersey Mens , and then gathered it back in and gained another 10 yards? You
know. This one.The return went all the way to the Steelers 10-yard line and set
up the Chiefs first touchdown of the game.No disrespect to KOIN-TV¡¯s Joe Hoyt
here ¡ª I thought exactly the same thing he did while watching the game ¡ª but it
turns out that this wasn¡¯t the result of any special awareness on the part of
Thomas.Instead, this was a carefully-rehearsed trick play that Chiefs special
teams coach Dave Toub had cooked up to counter any attempt by the Steelers to
punt short and/or out of bounds if Tyreek Hill was lined up to receive. In his
opening statement at Monday¡¯s press conference, head coach Andy Reid made a
somewhat vague reference to the play, saying that the team had practiced it all
week. But speaking to the media on Thursday, Toub was more specific.¡°We were
thinking they were going to try to kick away from Tyreek Hill ¡ª which they
did
Mecole Hardman
Jersey Cheap ,¡± Toub explained. ¡±They kicked a high, short kick. We had
Tyreek fake like it was a deep kick ¡ª when it actually was a short kick ¡ª and
then De¡¯Anthony was standing right there to field it. We were hoping that the
coverage would run by him ¡ª which they did ¡ª and then we were able to get a big
return. But you have to have trust and we have trust that those guys will field
it and make the right decisions. Then they had the trust in the scheme and it
worked. This was a well-executed play by those guys.¡±Now that you know this,
watch the play again. That¡¯s exactly what happened.Nonetheless, Toub wasn¡¯t
satisfied with his unit¡¯s performance during the first two weeks of the
season.¡°We¡¯re fortunate right now, but we know it¡¯s a long season.It¡¯s a
game-to-game thing. Things change. You kind of know where your weaknesses
are
Carlos Hyde
Jersey , you just don¡¯t want them to get exposed. You try to fix them.
There were a lot of mistakes made in [the first] game ¡ª a lot of mistakes ¡ª more
so in the second game than there was in the first game.It just didn¡¯t hurt us.
It didn¡¯t show up as a bad play. But hopefully we go back in the film room and we
correct it and get it fixed for the next game. But there¡¯s always something.
There¡¯s always something to improve on and you never know when something is
going to show up.¡±Let¡¯s say it once more: you just have to love Uncle Dave. Day
1 of the Senior Bowl is about as jam packed as you can. Here were some tidbits
from the weigh-ins:Weigh-insMississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat was the most
impressive body of the day with his 6-foot-6, 252-pound frame. He also came in
with the 36 inch arms. There¡¯s no body fat on Sweat. New Mexico State linebacker
Terrell Hanks was the runner up with a 6-foot-2, 234-pound frame. The upper body
of Hanks resembled that of you favorite super hero. The on-field performance was
way more Clark Kent than Superman. Stetson tight end Donald Parham got
noticeable gasps when he measured 6 feet 8 and 3/8 inches and 243 pounds. This
is a rare case when a team undersells a player¡¯s measurables, as he was listed
at 6 feet 8 and 222 pounds during the season. Normally a measurement like this
would warrant 6 feet 9 or higher.Utah safety Marquise Blair came in at very
slender 180 pounds at 6 feet 1 and a half. He was expected to be 15 pounds
heavier, but his narrow waste reveals someone who will struggle to maintain or
gain weight.Temple cornerback Rock Ya Sin was expected to be 6 feet 2 but came
in 5 feet 11 and 3/4.Chiefs interviewsMedia sessionsUtah Safety Marquise Blair

Topeka, but has also called it home since his family moved to the United States
from Jamaica.Texas cornerback Kris Boyd intercepted Patrick Mahomes in college.
They¡¯ve been competing since high school, as they both grew up in east Texas.
North Dakota State running back Bruce Anderson models his game after Alvin
Kamara, Saquon Barkley and Todd Gurley. South practice takeawaysTemple
cornerback Rock Ya Sin was the best corner for the South.South Carolina wide
receiver Deebo Samuel was the best receiver for both teams today. He attacked
the ball, is sudden and dynamic. Samuel got Ya Sin on a few reps.San Jose State
tight end Josh Oliver impressed throughout the day. He¡¯s a fluid athlete with
strong hands. He should be a day-two pick.Like
Oliver
Damien Williams
Jersey , LSU tight end Foster Moreau had himself a day. While not quite
the athlete Oliver is, he still ran crisp routes and showed strong hands. West
Virginia wide receiver David Sills struggled to separate but has the best hands
of the Senior Bowl class. He caught everything.Washington State tackle Andre
Dillard moves extremely well for a tackle.Clemson wide receiver Hunter Renfrow
has the body of an average high school football player on the field but gets
open consistently. Mississippi State EDGE Montez Sweat used his length extremely
well. He has a strong pass rush plan and flows smoothly from one move to his
counter moves.LA Tech EDGE Jaylon Ferguson displayed powerful hands and the
ability to move tackles. Old Dominion EDGE Oshane Ximines showed the best
ability to get the corner throughout the day.West Virginia linebacker David Long
had the best day in the linebacker group. He attacked well, and was smooth in
drills.Texas A&M defensive lineman Daylon Mack and Kingsley Keke both showed
a good first step and powerful hands.North practice takeawaysIt was a quiet day
for Delaware safety Nasir Adderley. He was lined up all over the field and
displayed good play recognition.Iowa defensive end Anthony Nelson was good
against the run in team drills and looked to be winning consistently in
one-on-one drills.TCU defensive lineman LJ Collier started a fight after trash
talking on back-to-back winning plays. He won in one-on-ones with good hand
usage. Western Illinois defensive lineman Khalen Saunders has a good first step,
relentless motor and looked like he belonged with upper tier talent.UMass wide
receiver Andy Isabella flashed consistently with excellent twitch, good hands
and long speed.NC State wide receiver Jakobi Meyers was the best receiver for
the North
team
Derrick
Thomas Jersey , winning all over the field. In a David-versus-Goliath type
of battle, the behemoth tackle Kaleb McGary dominated 6-foot linebacker Sutton
Smith who is transitioning from EDGE to off-ball linebacker but was given a
chance to fail miserably off the edge.Stetson tight end Donald Parham can¡¯t get
out of a three-point stance but shows some intriguing ability as a large, and I
repeat, large target in the pass ground. Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye
had an up and down performance. Still very intrigued by the skill set. AP
